Chocolate Orange Cake

Hi everyone!

Since a young age, I have absolutely loved the combination of chocolate and orange. Growing up, one of my favorite snacks was the Milka “ChocoJaffa” and recently many chocolate bars with a touch of circus have been taking over shelves. This taste has inspired today’s choice; I was in the supermarket thinking of an ingredient to base my next dessert on and suddenly I decided to make a chocolate orange cake.

Chocolate Orange Cake

  • 1 large orange
  • 90 gr. dark or normal chocolate26733028_10156202961489575_1711972659_o.jpg
  • 3 eggs
  • 240 ml. sunflower oil
  • 280 gr. white sugar
  • 25 gr. cocoa powder (I used 1 Dr. Oetker packet)
  • 250 gr. flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder (I used 1 Dr. Oetker packet)

Start off by boiling your washed orange in a pot of water for 30 minutes; keep the peel, but cut off the bottom end, and pierce the orange with a skewer or knife. Then allow it to cool for a few minutes and, in the meantime, melt your dark chocolate. I personally used the double boiler method, but if preferred it can be melted in a microwave for 2 minutes. Pre-heat your oven to 180°C/355°F. Cut your orange into a few pieces and blend them in a food processor until you are left with a purée. Next beat your eggs, sugar, and oil in a bowl. Add in your orange purée and melted chocolate. Finish off with the dry ingredients (cocoa, flour, baking powder). At this point the batter will look and smell so amazing, I couldn’t stop tasting it! Pour your batter into a 23 cm. round cake pan and bake for approximately 55-60 minutes; insert a toothpick in the middle to make sure it is fully baked. (If the top is already brown but the middle is still raw, then cover the top with foil.)

The cake is so aromatic that when you come close to it you simply can’t miss the lovely citrus smell. Also, can we please admire the perfect bottom of the cake? I was flipping it to remove the foil and couldn’t stop myself from taking a photo.

Seeing how I used dark chocolate, I ended up sprinkling some powdered on top to make the cake a bit sweeter. Nevertheless, it was so filling and with the right amount of orange. Overall, I think it’s a great alternative to regular chocolate cake.

Until next time!
